Trestle Chair is a small occasional chair that utilises a flexible leather backrest that can be inverted into two positions allowing the user to sit in two directions.
The form is inspired by traditional wooden trestles which are designed to support a variety of materials and objects. As new interpretation of this structure, the chair functions to support the human form.
The single piece backrest is made from a thick saddle hide leather that seamlessly intersects the wooden frame and makes the two direction seating possible.
The chair is ideal for small places, when somewhere to stop, perch or complete a quick task is needed.
Development
An inspiration board exploring existing wooden furniture that use larger sections of wood.
A range of 1:5 scale balsa wood models used to explore early concept form and structure.
Workshop drawings played a vital role in the manufacture of the chair. From deciding angles, to the exact positioning of dowel holes, they ensured all parts could be assembled precisely.
